Our Mission

The National Association for Music Education (NAfME) "among the world’s largest arts education organizations, is the only association that addresses all aspects of music education. NAfME advocates at the local, state, and national levels; provides resources for teachers, parents, and administrators; hosts professional development events; and offers a variety of opportunities for students and teachers. The Association orchestrates success for millions of students nationwide and has supported music educators at all teaching levels for more than a century." (nafme.org, 2019)

National Level

NAfME was founded in 1907, and is among the world's largest arts education organizations. It is the only association that focuses on all aspects of music education and advocates for teachers and students with elected officials. NAfME works to ensure that all students are able to receive a well-balanced, high quality education in music and that music remains an integral part of school curriculum. NAfME has worked to play a key role in the development of the Core Arts Standards to reach our goals of providing music education to all students.

Crane School of Music Chapter

The collegiate chapter of NAfME at the Crane School of Music strives to provide professional development opportunities for our undergraduate collegiate members within our campus community. All opportunities are meant to challenge, inspire, and guide our members as they prepare to go into the field as music educators.

Our NAfME Chapter consistently hosts different professional development events and workshops. By collaborating with our membership, faculty, alumni, community members, other NAfME collegiate chapters, and other student organizations (such as Crane's chapters of the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA), American String Teachers Association (ASTA), New York State Band Directors Association (NYSBDA), Crane Student Association (CSA)), we strive to sponsor events that are relevant and engaging experiences for our collegiate members.

Additionally, our chapter searches for educational opportunities outside of Potsdam. Each year we send a large group of members to the New York State NYSSMA Conference that's held annually in Rochester. In recent years, we have also sponsored members and faculty to present academic research in the field of music education at different conferences around the country.

We hope each trip, workshop and presentation will bring something new to our education, and contribute to the growth of our members as individuals, musicians, and educators.
