Lab Band | Started by former member and VP Joe Randazzo, Lab Band is an opportunity for members to practice their secondary instruments outside of tech classes, as well as practicing conducting an ensemble before student teaching! Since Crane now has a NYSBDA Chapter, they've taken over the running of this ensemble, and many participants are both NAfME and NYSBDA members!

NYSSMA Conference| Every year we send many of our members to the State Conference in Rochester. Pictured above are some of our members that attended the 2019 Conference, right after the Collegiate NAfME Dinner!

Date with a Classroom Instrument| With the expertise of our brilliant, creative Music Education faculty, Dr. Docker and Dr. O’Leary, Fall 2019 introduced us to and gave us opportunities to become familiar with classroom instruments and relevant curricula experiences that aren’t taught in Major classes. These skills were built through a series of workshops focusing on the use of auxiliary percussion, ukuleles, guitars, bucket drums, and other instruments in a general music setting. Once our members were familiar with the classroom instruments, we all got together to "jam out" to popular tunes, Jimmy Fallon and The Roots-style!

Open Forum #1: Economic Barriers to Inclusion | This was an open forum discussion with some of our brilliant Music Education faculty sharing what they learned through public school teaching. This discussion will tackled questions like: What are the expenses that make music exclusive? Why are those expenses necessary? How do we break down those costs, find alternatives, or advocate for them, so that our students may be successful; particularly in low-income districts? We thank  Dr. Andrea Maas, Dr. Robert Docker, and Dr. William Lake for such an eye-opening conversation!

Joy Douglass Open Forum #3: De-Tracking as a Route to Equity| This open forum was a part of Crane's Joy Anthony Douglass Visiting Master Teacher Program. This program was established by Joy Anthony Douglass ’56 to honor the transformative experiences she had as a student during her time at Crane. It enables visiting master teachers to share their insights and expertise with Crane School of Music students and faculty, as well as music educators throughout the region. This open forum was led by our K-12 Crane Alumni teachers, who will discuss the notion of "De-siloing" or "De-Tracking" our music education programs as a route toward Equity.

Considering Mental Health in the Classroom | This presentation/discussion workshop was led by our very own choral professor Dr. Francom in Fall 2018. This event focused on the parts of teaching that aren't always covered in our content classes.
